There are 18 regions (maakunta) in mainland Finland, and each one has a Regional Council (maakunnan liitto). The Regional Councils are part of regional administration. They are statutory joint municipal authorities that operate in accordance with the principles of municipal self-government.
The members of the Regional Council of South Karelia are all the municipalities in South Karelia. Its statutory duties include regional development and regional land-use planning.
The Regional Council of South Karelia also serves as a planning and advocacy body that works to promote the region’s cultural, material, and intellectual wellbeing.
In addition to its statutory duties, the Regional Council carries out other tasks. It represents and promotes the interests of the region, its municipalities, inhabitants, and business community. The Council also conducts research, compiles statistics, and prepares plans and reports concerning the region. The Regional Council acts as a cooperation platform for the various stakeholders and interest groups operating in the region.
The decision-makers of the Regional Council of South Karelia are elected officials from its member municipalities. In line with the results of municipal elections, they represent the political will of the region’s residents.
